⚠️ Why We Don’t Perform Anal Gland Expression—and Why It Might Not Be Safe

❌ It Can Be Harmful
Anal glands are delicate structures. If they’re already irritated, swollen, or infected, squeezing them—especially without proper training—can:
Rupture the gland
Force bacteria deeper into tissue
Cause pain, trauma, or inflammation
Spread infection under the skin
🔍 It Can Mask Serious Problems
Dogs who scoot or lick their back end may not just have “full” glands. They could have:
An impaction (a blockage that needs medical draining)
An infection or abscess (which may need antibiotics)
A rupture (open, draining wound)
Or even cancer in the gland area
Externally expressing a diseased gland could temporarily relieve pressure—but it doesn’t treat the root issue. Worse, it might delay proper veterinary care.
⚖️ It’s a Medical Procedure
Even “routine” expressions should be approached with caution. The process:
Requires knowledge of anatomy
Involves contact with internal tissue near the rectum
Can cause complications if done too often or improperly
Because of this, anal gland care is best left to licensed veterinarians, who can assess whether expression is needed, rule out underlying problems, and provide safe treatment if something is wrong.
✅ Our Policy

If your dog is showing signs of discomfort, we strongly recommend a vet visit. Your pup’s comfort, safety, and long-term health matter most. 💙🐾
